Cultivation System
In Costa Rica vanilla is grown by small farmers, both in agroforestry systems as well as in greenhouses, but we really love and promote the first one, which integrates itself in a symbiotic relation with the surrounding nature.
Researchers from the University of Göttingen have found that the vanilla cultivation in agroforestry systems, in which the vanilla grows under trees providing shade, has many benefits both for humans and nature. The benefits offered by cultivation in agroforestry systems are not limited to productivity, having as well a positive impact on nature in capturing the carbon emissions, giving shelter to various bird species, reptiles, insects, and fauna in general.
